We Haven’t Forgotten About Aceh. We Think You Shouldn’t Either.

Towards the end of November last year, floods linked to Cyclone Senyar devastated Aceh, Sumatra causing intense flash floods and landslides. At least 1,170 people died, and more than 100,000 houses were destroyed (CBM Global Disability Inclusion 2026). Millions have been displaced, with many roads and schools destroyed. In a forested area of 71,161 hectares in Batang Toru, 11% was affected by landslides, endangering the native Tapanuli orangutan population (Petley 2026). Now, nine months later, the news cycle has moved on, yet the devastation remains. Even if the urgent crisis is over, it is still a long journey back to a robust Aceh.

Our partners on the ground have found the lack of accessible drinking water is a major issue for displaced families; but using bottled water for household needs causes plastic pollution, and simply boiling water is unreliable and extremely time-intensive. This month, Terra Water is focused on providing clean drinking water for 359 individual families to help struggling families in Aceh. Ensuring that families have access to a filter that can clean contaminated water and eliminate common bacterial infections like E.coli is critical. 

As an individual, you can stand beside Terra Water by donating life-saving water filters. As a business, you can join Terra Water and build your CSR (corporate social responsibility) by donating in bulk— and as a thank you, we will advertise your business on our filters. Any and all businesses should reach out to us, as we have worked with both large companies like Gojek and local small businesses. While this campaign encourages the growth of our community’s health and economy, it is important to remember that our final goal is to join the people of Aceh in their journey of recovering and rebuilding from disaster.
